In the November 24, 1786 issue of the Pittsburg Gazette the following add appeared:
Wanted. – A man who understands vocal music and who can teach it with propriety. Such a person will meet with good encouragement from the inhabitants of Pittsburg.
The Pittsburgh Historical Music Society was founded in 2010 by William and Laura Lockard, Karen Parsons, and Larry Weiss. The PHMS understands that music is part of the culture and is best understood in it’s original context. For that reason the PHMS strives to perform on original instruments, in historical dress, and in historical venues. Lively and engaging interpretation of history helps bring our heritage to life.
The PHMS Orchestra consists of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, wooden flutes, bassoon, viol, and drum. Other period instruments are featured as guest artists for some programs.
The orchestra rehearses scheduled Sundays at the Depreciation Lands Museum in Allison Park, PA. The DLM has been very supportive to our orchestra – they have our undying gratitude! We are currently seeking venues for concerts in the 2016 – 2017 season. Please contact us if you are planning an event and are interested in hiring the orchestra!
